Taft blanks Vaqueros 2-0

SBCC had a first-timer playing goalie on Friday and the Vaqueros couldn't find the net in a 2-0 women's soccer loss at Taft. The Vaqueros, who had beaten the Cougars 6-0 on Sept. 6, fell to 5-3.

Matalyn Perry, a freshman defender from Phelan, Calif., put on the gloves to play goalie in place of the injured Alex Camarillo. "We didn't know Alex wouldn't be able to play until a few days ago and Matalyn did a great job in her first college appearance in goal," said coach John Sisterson.

Katherine Sheehy appeared to be pulled down twice in the box in the first half but neither one was called, according to Sisterson. Sheehy was grabbed in the 56th minute and the Vaqueros got a penalty kick but Chloe Montano hit the crossbar.

Taft (2-4-2) scored in the 62nd and 74th minutes on a pair of breakaways. The Vaqueros outshot the Cougars 13-3, including 6-2 in shots on goal.

"We dominated about 90 percent of the game," said Sisterson. "We just couldn't get one past the keeper."

The Vaqueros will take another long road trip on Friday when they travel to Victorville for a nonconference game vs. Victor Valley at 2 p.m.
