Sheehy is SBART Athlete of the Week

Katherine Sheehy has been named Athlete of the Week by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table. The award is given to the top female athlete in all sports for the Santa Barbara area that covers UCSB, Westmont, SBCC and the local high schools.

She was one of three SBCC student-athletes to be named AOWs on Monday, joining Carolin Chang (state champ in women's golf) and Robert Hutchins (men's basketball) from the week of Nov. 14-20.

Sheehy, a freshman forward from La Canada High, scored the first goal in a 3-1 Southern Cal Regional women's soccer playoff upset at No. 6 Ventura on Tuesday and tallied the only goal in a 1-0 win at No. 2 Santiago Canyon on Saturday. The 14th-seeded Vaqueros finished third in the WSC North, then reeled off four straight playoff victories to reach the State Final 4 for the first time ever.

Sheehy is the third-leading scorer for the Vaqueros (16-6-1) with 10 goals and nine assists.

Santa Barbara has won six in a row, beating four conference champions and recording four shutouts.

The Vaqueros were seeded No. 2 in the South and will take on Diablo Valley (No. 1 North, 17-1-6) in the semifinals on Friday at Ventura College at 7 p.m. Four-time defending state champion Cerritos (21-1-1) will battle Folsom Lake (17-3-4) at 1 p.m.

Diablo Valley, located in Pleasant Hill, and Folsom Lake tied for first in the Big 8 Conference.

The State championship is set for Sunday at Ventura, starting at 2 p.m.
