Martha Mora and Serena Ramirez scored in the ninth and 11th minutes, respectively, on Friday to lead No. 11 Cuesta to a 2-0 women's soccer victory over SBCC in San Luis Obispo.
The Vaqueros (4-5-1, 1-1 WSC North) outshot the Cougars (9-1, 2-0) by a wide margin, 22-8, and had 11 shots on-goal.
The loss was the first WSC setback for the Vaqueros in nearly three years. They're 20-1-1 in WSC play since dropping a 3-2 decision to Ventura on Nov. 4, 2016.
"It was disappointing to lose a game that we had the majority of possession," said coach John Sisterson. "They caught us out with a long hopeful ball over the top and then we defended poorly on a corner to go down two goals early in the first half.
"We kept playing and created more chances but couldn't find the back of the net. In the second half, we put the ball in the net three times only to get overruled. Mekaylla White received the ball after making a great run but the linesman raised his flag for offsides.
"Then Molly Branigan struck a great kick from 40 yards which hit the underside of the bar and bounced down over the line. A defender cleared it and all our girls felt it was a goal but the referee didn't allow it. In the third instance, Mekaylla ran from a clear onside position between two defenders to put the ball in the net. But again, they called offsides."
The Vaqueros will host No. 2 and unbeaten Fresno City (9-0-1) on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
