Megan Galvan lofted a shot over the head of goalie Elizabeth Estrada in the 34th minute on Tuesday afternoon and No. 2-ranked Fresno City made it stand up for a 1-0 women's soccer win over SBCC.
The Vaqueros (4-6-1) suffered their second straight shutout and third in the last four games. Fresno, which has outscored its opponents 30-2, is one of six unbeatens in the state with a 10-0-1 record.
"It was a good effort against a very good team," said coach John Sisterson. "The girls are disappointed but I told them to keep their heads up. That's a strong team that could be in the Final 4 and we competed well with them.
"We're trying to address it [the lack of scoring]. We're getting in sometimes but we're just not hitting the back of the net. Sometimes that's happens, it's a funny old game. Then all of a sudden, you start to get the run of the green and you put three or four in the back of the net. I'm not too concerned about that yet, as long as we're competing."
Fresno outshot the Vaqueros 16-10, including 9-4 in shots on goal.
The Rams had a great chance to score in the fourth minute when two players got around the goalie about nine yards out. Sophomore defender Monica Salas swooped in and cleared away a shot to the right sideline.
Santa Barbara only had three shots in the second half and one was on-target.
Fresno coach Oliver Germond sent in a steady stream of substitutes and 19 players saw action.
Estrada made seven saves for the Vaqueros and got some fingers on the game's only goal but couldn't keep it out.
"I thought Elizabeth got her hands on it and might have knocked it over the bar but it dropped in behind her," said Sisterson. "We asked them to step it up in the second half and it was 0-0."
Destiny Boynton, a freshman from Santa Barbara High, saw her first action of the year and started in the midfield.
"Destiny played 60 minutes before getting injured and she played very well in her first game," Sisterson noted.
The Vaqueros return to WSC North action on Friday when L.A. Pierce comes to La Playa for a 7 p.m. game.
