SBCC sophomore Taylor Valle found the net in the 87th minute on Tuesday, just one minute after being inserted into the WSC North women's soccer game at L.A. Pierce.
It was the first career goal for Valle, a 5-foot-5 defender from Miami, Fla. The Vaqueros are 8-6-3 and 5-1-2. The Brahmas are 7-9-3 and 3-4-3.
"It was a hot afternoon and we were a little under the weather with players missing due to sickness," said SBCC coach John Sisterson. "We scored a great goal only to have disallowed by the linesman which I felt was very harsh."
Stephanie Reyna staked Pierce to a 1-0 lead at 32:04. Forty-four seconds later, SBCC goalie Savannah Ayers had to leave the match and was replaced by Elizabeth Estrada.
"In the second half, we pressed hard and just couldn't find the back of the net, although we were pushing forward at every opportunity and creating problems," Sisterson explained. "Then Taylor came on in the 86th minute and a minute later, she lifted a shot over the keeper for a well-deserved goal to tie it up."
The Vaqueros dropped to third place in the conference race. Ventura (6-2-1) and Cuesta (6-3-1) both have 19 points and the Vaqueros have 17. But Ventura has played one more game than Santa Barbara and Cuesta has played two more.
The Vaqueros will travel to Hancock on Friday for a 3 p.m. WSC match and then travel to Ventura on Sunday for a makeup game at 6 p.m.
