Late Equalizer Forces SBCC Women's Soccer to Settle for Draw Against LA Harbor CC

WILMINGTON, CA - In a gripping showdown, the SBCC Women's Soccer team was held to a draw by LA Harbor CC, 1-1. Their spirited performance showed they have the mettle to go head-to-head against challenging opponents.

The standout moment for SBCC came when Gizela Amariz Zermeno floated a masterful corner kick, met perfectly by Stella McKay's header to secure a goal. The euphoria was short-lived, though, as LA Harbor clawed back with a last-minute equalizer.

Goalkeeper Anna Kirk displayed heroics, pulling off vital saves throughout the match. Defensively, Stella McKay, Charlotte Wheeler, Gabi Wilcox, and Emily McGuire proved to be a formidable wall, thwarting many of LA Harbor's attempts. Midfield saw the dynamic combination of Gizela Zermeno and Athena Raelynn Bow-Graham, whose problem-solving and tactical prowess played a pivotal role in dictating the game's pace and tempo. Upfront, SBCC's forwards showcased their determination, challenging LA Harbor's defenders unrelentingly.

Head Coach Alexander Zermeno, reflecting on the match, said, "The women did great today, after a long day of travel. Obviously, we want to win, but we'll take it as a learning experience and continue to work the details."

"I am proud of the players' efforts. It's not easy to go to someone's home and win," Zermeno added. "We were so close, but that's how the game is sometimes. I'm excited for what the future holds for this group."

Though the final whistle saw them share the spoils, SBCC's commendable display promises many more thrilling encounters in the fixtures ahead.

The Women's Soccer team plays at Ventura College against Orange Coast College next Friday at 2:15 PM.
