Erika Muehring and Anna Watkins placed seventh and ninth on Thursday in the season-opening Mt. San Antonio Invitational 1-meter diving meet in Walnut.

Muehring, a freshman from Calabasas High, totaled 133.70 points and Watkins had 113.85.

"The ladies all met the challenge of their first meet with grace and tremendous strength," said Vaquero coach Trish Salvatore. "They really stepped it up a notch.

"Erika's best dive was a beautiful inward dive in pike position, getting scores of 6 and 6½. It looked like she had been diving for years."

Watkins' best dive was "an inward tuck with a very smooth entry."

Nicole Poulos, a goalie on the Vaqueros' state championship water polo team, finished 14th with 86.05 points.

"I'm so proud of our ladies," added Salvatore. "I am looking forward to upcoming meets and watching their growth. They're determined to conquer the 3 meter next."

The Vaquero swim team will compete in the Mt. SAC Invitational on Friday.
