SBCC freshman Teresa Downey, the No. 1 seed for the WSC Individual Women's Tennis Tournament, qualified for the State Championships at Ojai in both singles and doubles on Friday at Ventura College.

Downey, a 46-year-old mother of two, had a first-round bye, then swept Ayaka Takeuchi of Glendale 6-2, 6-1 to earn a berth in the State tourney on April 24-27. The left-handed Downey teamed with Monica Kunz to down Karissa Coronel/Georgia Farrar of Ventura 6-2, 6-0 in a first-round doubles match.

Downey won her 10th straight singles match to improve to 10-1 on the year and 9-0 in the WSC.

Gabriela McDaniel, the Vaqueros No. 2 player, blanked Chrystal Aki of Antelope Valley 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, then fell to Yannick Garcia of Ventura 6-1, 6-1. McDaniel will compete in the back draw on Saturday with hopes of qualifying for the State tourney.

Kunz, Kenzie Usher and Lisa Van Dijk all suffered first-round losses for the Vaqueros. Sophie Fink withdrew due to illness.
