Marcela Massaglia posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles on Friday to clinch SBCC's 5-4 come-from-behind women's tennis victory in the regular-season finale at College of the Sequoias.
The Vaqueros are 10-3 overall and Sequoias is 6-10.
"We made the four-hour drive to Visalia and were facing a scrappy team playing at home on a hot day (93 degrees)," said coach Lance Kronberg. "Sequoias took a 2-1 lead after doubles (the Giants play doubles first in their conference). Jackie Wilson and Gabriela McDaniel struggled at No. 3 and lost 8-5 but I was very impressed by McDaniel, our team captain.
"She was quite sick but refused to quit and leave her teammates short-handed. I'm so proud of her effort. It really inspired the team in singles."
Maddie Seeds, Amanda Berke, and Edda von Hodenberg all swept their singles matches, dropping just three games in six sets. Berke/Von Hodenberg got the doubles win, 8-4.
The Vaqueros will compete in the WSC Individual Tournament on April 3-4. They're expected to get a bid to the Southern Cal Regional team playoffs that start on Tuesday, April 7.
