Massaglia, Kolkman advance to WSC quarters, earn State berths

Marcela Massaglia and Tess Kolkman qualified for the State Tournament on Friday on the first day of the WSC Individual women's tennis tournament at Ventura College. By reaching the quarterfinals, both players qualified for the State Tournament on April 23-26 at The Ojai.

Massaglia, a freshman from Brazil, beat Jia Wiebe of Ventura 6-2, 6-0 while Kolkman, a freshman from Holland, knocked off Celsea McGrew of Antelope Valley 6-3, 6-0. Maddie Seeds and Zionne Lee also have a chance to qualify in Saturday's back draw.

The Vaqueros qualified two doubles teams for State. Massaglia/Seeds earned a spot by beating Candace Nito/Cristina Ortiz of Ventura 8-1 and Kolkman/Lee defeated Shawntel Patterson/Sammie Xiao of Santa Monica 8-4. Two more Vaquero teams will compete for State berths in Saturday's back draw – Gabriela McDaniel/Jackie Wilson and Amanda Berke/Edda von Hodenberg.

Kolkman, who's a perfect 11-0 this year, and Lee were named first team All-WSC at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively.
