It was a great day for SBCC women's tennis on Friday as three Vaqueros reached the singles quarterfinals and three doubles teams moved into the quarters on the first day of the WSC Tournament at Ventura College and Camino Real Park.

No. 3 seed Maddie Seeds and No. 8 Tyler Bunderson advanced to the quarterfinals in different fashion. Seeds lost just three games against Melonti Emmanouilidi of Glendale (6-0, 6-1) and No. 13 Jessica Powell of Ventura (6-1, 6-1). Seeds will take on No. 10 Meredy Gharabegi of Glendale in Saturday's quarterfinal round.

Bunderson, a freshman from Santa Ynez High, is the eighth seed and she won a pair of 10-point pro tiebreakers. She beat Kanako Kihara of Glendale 6-3, 2-6, (10-7) and No. 9 Karly Britton of Antelope Valley 4-6, 6-3, (10-7). Bunderson will battle No. 1 Mariko Sagara of Ventura on Saturday.

The surprise of the day was No. 18 Kassandra Ortiz, who upset No. 12 Lauren Voiers of Santa Monica 6-1, 6-2 and rallied to stun No. 11 Veronika Galstyan of Glendale 4-6, 6-4, (10-5). Ortiz will meet No. 2 Viktoriya Shumakova of Glendale in the quarterfinals.

SBCC sent six players into the Round of 16.

No. 17 Julianna Adelman blanked Mikaela Wilje of Santa Monica 6-0, 6-0, then succumbed to No. 1 Sagara by the same score. Gabrielle Goss posted a 6-0, 6-1 win, then lost to No. 4 Riley Tucker of Bakersfield 6-3, 6-1. Lesly Zapata De Lira upset No. 16 Jia Wiebe of Ventura 6-1, 6-2 before falling to Shumakova 6-3, 6-2.

Adelman, Goss and Zapata De Lira are still alive in the eight-player back draw.

In doubles, No. 3 Seeds/Zapata De Lira edged No. 11 Kihara/Alexa Mendez of Glendale 8-5 to move into the quarterfinals against No. 5 Masa Petrovic/Voiers of Santa Monica.

No. 8 Julianna Adelman/K. Ortiz routed Sammy Xiao/Maya Narumi of Santa Monica 8-0 and will take on No. 4 Shumakova/Gharabegi of Glendale in the quarters. No. 10 Madison Ortiz/Goss downed Celsea McGrew/Laney Ricker of AVC 8-2 to earn a Saturday date with the top-seeded Sagara/Jessica Powell of Ventura.
