Cerritos took a 2-1 doubles lead on Tuesday, then won four of the first five singles to secure a 6-1 women's tennis victory over SBCC in the opening round of the Southern Cal Team Regional in Norwalk.
The top-seeded Falcons won their 15th straight match to improve to 22-1, beating the Vaqueros in a 1st-round playoff for the second straight year. No. 7 SBCC ends its season at 11-4 with the second-most wins in the last 10 years.
Gabrielle Goss/Madison Ortiz got the lone point for the Vaqueros, beating Jovana Milosevic/Danielle Pastor to boost their record to 13-1.
"We had our opportunities and came up short," said coach Randy Moharram. "Our young team, with only one sophomore in Maddie Seeds, got some valuable playoff experience and have a good understanding of where we need to be next season.
The Vaqueros didn't have the services of Kassandra Ortiz at No. 2 doubles and No. 5 singles. She was out with an illness.
Eight SBCC players have qualified for the CCCAA State Championships on April 21-24 at The Ojai. Maddie Seeds advanced to the WSC singles semifinals and will battle Viktoriya Shumakova of Glendale on Friday at noon at Ventura College.
