Four Vaqueros advance to Round of 32 in State Tourney

SBCC sent eight players to the CCCAA State Women's Tennis Championships and four of them advanced to the Round of 32.

Maddie Seeds made it in both singles and doubles at the 116th Ojai Valley Tournament. After a first-round bye, the 13th-seeded Seeds swept Lina Nguyen of De Anza 6-1, 6-3 at Camino Real Park in Ventura. She'll meet Joelle Huelse (No. 3 North) of Canada in Friday's Round of 32 at Buena High, starting at 8 a.m.

Lesly Zapata De Lira, a freshman from Carpinteria High, beat Brianna Leigh-Pink of San Diego City 6-1, 6-0, then fell to No. 2 Betsy Samonte of Canada by the same scores. Julianna Adelman lost to Miriam Lane (No. 10 North) of Santa Rosa 6-3, 6-0 in the second round.

Tyler Bunderson and Kassandra Ortiz were both eliminated in the first round.

In doubles, No. 14 Seeds/Zapata De Lira had a first-round bye, then defeated Preston Bernd/Jaeli Samonte of Santa Rosa 6-3, 6-2. They'll take on the No. 3 team from the North, Mari Ochoa/Milah Ryland of Fresno City, on Friday in a Round of 32 match at Buena High at 1 p.m.

Gabrielle Goss and Madison Ortiz also reached the Round of 32 for the Vaqueros. After a bye, the knocked off the No. 9 team from the North, Anjelica Frank/Arielle Frank of Folsom Lake 6-4, 6-4. Goss/Oritz will challenge No. 8 Ashley Glick/Dominique Willette of Saddleback in Friday's third round at Ventura College at 1 p.m.

Adelman/K. Ortiz won a first-round doubles match over Aycee Plascencia/Dalila Vasquez of Sequoias 6-1, 6-3 before falling to South No. 3, Danielle Garrido/Lauren Smith of San Diego Mesa 6-2, 6-0.

Bunderson/Savannah Bickle got a first-round bye, then dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to the No. 7 South duo, Taylor Heath and Anastasia Khomyachenko of State dual-team champion Cerritos.
