2 singles and a doubles team advance in WSC Championships

A pair of SBCC singles players moved into the Round of 16 and a doubles team reached the quarterfinals on Friday in the WSC Women's Tennis Championships at Ventura College.

No. 8 seed Laura Berther beat Kenzi Williamson of Bakersfield 6-2, 6-0 in the second round. The freshman from Switzerland will take on No. 9 Veronika Galstyan of Glendale in Saturday's Round of 16. No. 16 Tyler Bunderson had a first-round bye, then swept No. 17 Brittany Aguilar of Bakersfield 6-3, 6-4. Bunderson faces top-seeded Mayra Jovic of Santa Monica on Saturday.

No. 10 Lesly Zapata De Lira fell in the second round to No. 12 Srna Lepchevska of Santa Monica by default. Josephine Pulver won her first-round set 8-2, then lost a grueling 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 decision to No. 13 Lea Meschke of Ventura.

No. 20 Julianna Adelman also lost a tough second-rounder to No. 15 Kaylee Defrees of Bakersfield 6-4, 4-6, (10-5 super tiebreaker).

In doubles, No. 10 Bunderson/Adelman had a bye, then knocked off No. 8 Paige Darstein/Aguilar of Bakersfield 3-0, default. Bunderson will see No. 1-seeded Jovic again in the doubles quarterfinals when she and Adelman take on Jovic/Abby Mullins on Saturday. Bunderson/Adelman qualified for a spot in the CCCAA State Championships at Ojai.

No. 5 Berther/De Lira defaulted to No. 12 Megan Fleming/Alyssa Powell of Ventura in the second round. No. 11 Pulver/Paige Jensen also fell in the second round to Hailey McNall/Kinako Kihara of Glendale 8-3.
