Pulver/Valtierra surprise No. 6 seed on Day 1 of State Championships

Josephine Pulver and Pia Valtierra posted a big upset in doubles on the opening day of the CCCAA Women's Tennis State Championships at the Ojai Tournament.

Pulver, a sophomore from San Marcos High, and Valtierra, a freshman from Villanova Prep, cruised past Jolene Beaulieu/Mikah Kahler of Riverside 6-0, 6-1 in the first round. Then they stunned the sixth-seeded Carlee Ellis/Angelica Gagliano of state team runner-up De Anza 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 in the tiebreaker.

Pulver/Valtierra advance to the Round of 32 where they'll take on No. 11 seed Itzi Torres/Diviana Bravo of state champion Cerritos on Friday at Ventura College. First serve is at 12:30 p.m.

Valtierra won a singles match as well, defeating Sophia Moeckelmann of Chabot 6-3, 6-0. She was eliminated by No. 2 seed Lisa Suzuki of Cerritos 6-0, 6-0. Peyvandi lost her opening singles match to Madisson Giese of El Camino 6-2, 7-6 and Pulver dropped a close 7-5, 6-3 decision to Sara Le Boulenge of Orange Coast.

Katelyn Peyvandi and Gabrielle Goss, the Vaqueros' No. 1 doubles duo, was seeded 12th. They beat a team from Grossmont 6-1, 6-0 to move into the Round of 32 on Friday vs. Le Boulenge/Jo Ann Taylor of Orange Coast. That match will be played at Buena High at 1 p.m.

Hanna Pesniak and Maddie Mitchell beat Claudia Houdre/Yvonne Ng of CC San Francisco, 6-3, 6-4, then fell to No. 4 Giese and Lina Ito of El Camino, 6-1, 6-0.
