GLENDALE, CA – The Santa Barbara City College Women's Tennis team lost at Glendale on Tuesday, 6-3.
"Glendale was a tough team today, especially at 1 doubles and 1 and 2 singles," head coach Chris Pope said. "They have some solid players in those positions. But it showed me where my girls can improve, and I think that will make all the difference the next time we play them."
Beginning with the doubles matches, top Vaqueros pair Carmen Tzab and Kate Zeile played a really tight contest, but ultimately lost 9-7. Sierra Bolanos and Nicole O'Malley evened the score in 2 doubles with an 8-3 win.
In the 1, 2, and 3 singles matches, all three Vaqueros fell after losing tough first sets: Tzab lost a tiebreaker 7-2, Zeile lost competitively 6-4, and Bolanos lost an even closer 7-5. They all would lose their second sets after running out of gas.
"We had a bunch of close first sets that could have gone either way," Pope said. "I think we'll take them next time."
After defaulting the 3 doubles—and awaiting a future 6 singles default—the team match was now decided as Glendale had reached 5 wins. Don't tell that to O'Malley or Anna Kronberg, though, as the two Vaqueros rounded out the day on a high note.
O'Malley dominated her first set 6-1 and withstood a potential comeback in the second, winning 6-4. She would be the only Vaquero with 2 wins on the day. Kronberg followed that up with her first win of the year, only losing 1 game in each set.
"I'm really proud of Anna and Nicole today. Anna played great, and Nicole found a way to close out her singles match," Pope said proudly.
The Vaqueros head to Santa Monica on Thursday for another conference matchup at 1:00 PM.
