Costello breaks 31-year-old record in 5000

Tiffany Costello set a new SBCC women's track and field record in the 5000 on Friday and the Vaqueros recorded seven season bests in the Occidental Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic.

The event feature a large number of athletes from NCAA Div. 1, 2 and 3 schools as well as NAIA, Community College and Club athletes.

Costello took fourth in her heat in 17:34.37, shaving 5.27 seconds off Anne Hayden's 1986 school record. Costello, a sophomore from Coto de Caza, Calif., finished 28th in a field of 156 runners.

Carolin Bothe ran 2:23.64 to win her 11-woman heat in the 800. She was 18th overall out of 58 runners. Andrea Mueller notched season bests in the 800 (2:32.72) and javelin (22.67 meters).

Alana Ochoa was second in the discus (37.33m), fifth in the shot put (10.97m, No. 10 SBCC mark) and ninth in the hammer (38.46), improving on her own No. 4 school mark. Yuliana Garibay recorded a season-best 12:27.60 in the 3000, lowering her No. 8 all-time mark from last year.

The Vaqueros will travel to Lancaster to compete in the Antelope Valley Invitational on St. Patrick's Day.
