Kimumba wins 400; Vaqueros take fifth in WSC

Marie Kimumba claimed the 400-meter title on Friday and SBCC placed fifth in the WSC Women's Track & Field Championships at Ventura College.

West L.A. won the 11-team meet with 152 points and Ventura was second with 115. The Vaqueros' eight-woman squad racked up 75 points, missing fourth place by a half-point.

Kimumba, a freshman from Sweden, was first in the 400 (58.00), second in the 200 (24.85) and fifth in the 100 (12.76). She missed the school record in the 200 by three-hundredths of a second.

Marie-Aime Cochet placed second in the hammer with a six-meter PR of 40.76 meters (133-8½). Alana Ochoa was fourth in the hammer (33.76m). Christy Chavira had a big PR and broke 5:00 with her second-place effort of 4:57.36 in the 1500.

Five SBCC athletes advanced to the Southern Cal Prelims on Saturday at San Diego Mesa.
