Vaqueros sweep Cuesta in WSC debut

Shannon Friend recorded 11 kills and a .455 hitting percentage on Friday night, leading No. 6 SBCC to a 3-0 women's volleyball win over Cuesta in San Luis Obispo. The scores were 25-11, 25-20, 25-20.

The Vaqueros (13-2, 1-0) hit .345 in the first set of the WSC opener. Santa Barbara, seeking its fourth straight WSC North title and sixth in the last seven years, is 61-6 in conference play since 2009.

Friend,a 6-foot freshman from Sonora High, had just one error in 22 total attacks. Katelynn Womack also had 11 kills and Kaitlyn Clemann notched eight.

Tristen Thompson recorded 16 digs while Raleigh McKinney had 11 digs and four aces. Shiloe Parsons dished out 22 assists and Hillary Bean had 12. Hannah Cantrell was in on six blocks.

The Vaqueros are 4-0 at home and will host top-ranked and undefeated L.A. Pierce (16-0, 1-0) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Brahmas edged the Vaqueros 3-2 on Aug. 29 in the championship of the Pierce Kickoff Classic.
