Vaqueros claim second straight WSC title, 10-8

Kendra Carr scored three goals and Nicole Cosares tallied two goals and five steals on Saturday as SBCC edged L.A. Valley 10-8 to win its second straight WSC women's water polo championship.

Addison Seale and Mackenzie Perez had two goals each and Mackenzie Richards stopped 12 shots between the pipes in the WSC Tournament final at L.A. Valley. Valley (17-7, 8-1) handed the Vaqueros (19-12, 8-1) their only conference loss 12-11 in sudden-death overtime back on Sept. 30.

Santa Barbara, the No. 2 seed, has won six straight games. This is the second year that SBCC has competed in water polo.

"I am so proud of this group, they truly deserve this win," said coach Chuckie Roth. "Every member was a big part of our championship. We played great defense and Richards made some huge stops."

SBCC scored five times in the second period and led 7-6 at halftime.

"Mackenzie Perez drilled a 7-meter bar-down goal with two seconds left in the third and that gave us the momentum," noted Roth. "Addison Seale and Carr scored goals and Maddie Brooks and Perez made key steals in the last 2:30 that allowed us to run out the clock."

Santa Barbara was seeded No. 7 for the Southern Cal Regional and will play No. 10 Palomar (14-11) in the first round on Thursday at noon at Mt. SAC in Walnut.
