Fraser to play for Canada in FINA World Junior Championships

SBCC freshman Emma Fraser has been selected to play for the Canadian 20U national team in the 12th FINA World Women's Junior Water Polo Championships.

The event will be held on Sept. 3-9 at Volos, Greece. Canada, which finished fourth in the 2015 Junior Worlds, is in Group C with Italy, Serbia and Slovakia.

Fraser is a 5-foot-8 utility player from Victoria, British Columbia. She's the first player from SBCC's water polo program to play in the Junior Worlds.

"I am so excited for Emma," said coach Chuckie Roth. "She works really hard and loves the sport."

The Vaqueros have had great success in their first three years of water polo, winning three WSC titles and the 2016 Southern Cal championship. They started the year 22-0 last season and finished as the state runner-up with a 33-2 record.

Halie Johnson (Soph., San Marcos High, 87 goals last year) is the only returner. All the other Vaqueros are freshmen, including Fraser.

"Emma has a lot of water polo knowledge and is very talented," Roth added. "She loves the game and wants to be great. She shoots very well, has great speed and leg drive and is a great team player.

"We had some great practices prior to her departure for Greece. The team is amazing. They're hard workers and great people."

The Vaqueros open their season on Sept. 8-9 in the Central Coast Invitational at Cuesta. They'll play Diablo Valley and Merced on Friday, Sept. 8.
