No. 1 Vaqueros to face San Joaquin Delta in State semifinal

SBCC is the No. 1 seed from the South for the CCCAA Women's Water Polo State Final Four and will take on North #2 San Joaquin Delta on Friday at 2:15 p.m. at Cuesta College.

Cuesta, located in San Luis Obispo, is a WSC rival of the Vaqueros. Santa Barbara has played eight games in the Cougars' pool this year in two tournaments and their record is 7-1.

The Vaqueros were the state runner-up last year, falling to Riverside 9-8 in overtime in the final.

SBCC is 29-3 this year with 10 straight wins. The Vaqueros won their fourth straight WSC title and captured their second straight Southern Cal championship last Saturday, beating Riverside 6-4 at L.A. Valley.

The Vaqueros are ranked No. 1 in the state and San Joaquin Delta (26-10) is No. 6. SBCC beat the Mustangs 6-4 on Sept. 16 at the Riverside Tournament.

Sierra (24-5), the North No. 1, will clash with South No. 2 Riverside (25-4) in Friday's first semifinal at 11:45 a.m. The championship game is set for 1:15 p.m. on Saturday with the third-place game at 10:45 a.m.

Emma Fraser, a freshman utility player from Victoria, British Columbia, leads the Vaqueros with 80 goals, 54 steals and 30 assists. Fraser, the No. 11 goal-scorer in the state, has 20 goals in the last five games. Sarah Parson has 48 goals, followed closely by Meagan Mckillican (44 goals), Kemi Dijkstra (40) and Halie Johnson (39). Johnson, a sophomore from San Marcos High, leads the Vaqueros in assists (34) and is second in steals (47).

The Vaqueros are No. 4 in state offense, averaging 11.8 goals a game. Goalie Nicole Poulos is 21-3 with a 4.1 goals-against average.

Delta is led by Jessica Diaz with 43 goals and 25 steals. Sophomore Kate Allen has 40 goals, 49 assists and 39 steals.
