SBCC had seven different goal scorers in game one and Taylor Brooks found the back of the net six times in game two as No. 2 SBCC topped Orange Coast College, 12-5, and No. 9 Sierra College, 10-5, on day one of the Long Beach City College Battle at the Beach at Cerritos College.

SBCC (21-3, 5-0) will take on No. 1 Riverside for the third time this year in their next match, which is set for an 11:30 start tomorrow. The Vaqueros have split their first two matches against Riverside this season.

"We had a great outing today and really showed a great deal of growth," said SBCC Head Coach Chuckie Roth.

"In the first game Madison Wayman had a great outing, holding her opponents scoreless. Also Lanie Acevedo had several contributions. Acevedo brings a huge smile and positive energy to everything she does. She has improved a lot and it is fun to be a part of her growth."

The Vaqueros opened up a 4-0 lead in game one on the strength of four goals by four different players. Allison Kay opened the scoring for SBCC at 2:18 of the first. Sophomore Hana Wigzell scored her 23rd goal of the year 40 seconds later to give SBCC a 2-0 lead after one quarter.

SBCC blew open the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Pirates 4-1 to open a 6-1 halftime lead on their way to a 12-5 final. The Vaqueros reached the 20-win plateau for the fourth straight year.

Freshman Zoe Johnson had four saves and Jayde Maniscalco had two saves in a combined effort in goal.

In game two, SBCC fell behind 1-0 at the 7:39 mark of the first quarter against Sierra, the defending CCCAA State Champions, on a goal by freshman Angie Calzada. However, that lead was short-lived as Brooks answered with two goals in a 1:17 span to give the Vaqueros a lead they would not relinquish.

After a back-and-forth first quarter that ended with SBCC leading 5-4, the Vaqueros created some breathing room by outscoring Sierra 3-0 in the second quarter to take an 8-4 lead into halftime. Annie Ackert scored twice for SBCC in the second and Brooks added their third goal of the game in the second as well.

SBCC continued the momentum after halftime, outscoring Sierra 2-1 in the second half to nail down the win. The Vaqueros scored five straight goals over the final three quarters before Sierra finally broke the streak with a goal of their own with 23 seconds left in the match. Johnson started the game in goal for SBCC and made six saves while Maniscalco had one save in relief of Johnson.

Sierra had come into the match hot, winning 13 of 14 games, but SBCC's suffocating defense and stellar play in goal led the Vaqueros to the 10-5 win.

"In our second game we came out playing great offensively but made a few silly mistakes to allow some easy goals," said Roth. "I was really proud that the kids buckled down on defense and were able to keep Sierra scoreless to the last two minutes of  the game. Taylor Brooks had one of their best performances of the season, while Zoe Johnson was a wall on defense. Zoe anchors our defense and adds so much to our teams strength. Jaye Maniscalco played the 4th quarter and played great. Jayde is a huge part of this team. So positive and caring and really makes us better in and out of the water."

Against Sierra, Brooks tallied six goals to bring their season total to 89. Ackert had three goals and Wayman scored one for the Vaqueros.
