Chavira leads Vaqueros to fifth in Tour de Cuesta

Christy Chavira, Yuliana Garibay and Karla Jaime finished in a tight pack on Friday, leading SBCC to fifth place in the Tour de Cuesta women's cross country race at San Luis Obispo.

Chavira, a freshman from Righetti High, covered the 5K Fairbanks Cross Country course in 22:08 to take 24th place. Garibay was 27th in 22:52 and Jaime took 28th in 22:55. Bridget Cooke was 47th in 25:07 and Myleka John rounded out the top five with a 48th-place finish in 26:56. Shannon Busse placed 59th in 32:00

Cuesta's Miranda Daschian topped the 60-runner field in 19:16.

Sequoias, ranked No. 4 in the state, won the team title with 37 points, edging No. 2 Mt. SAC by 10 points. The Vaqueros were fifth with 140 points.

"It was great to have a full squad out there competing today," said coach Scott Fickerson. "Christy and Karla both ran really strongly for us today, moving up well through the field."

The Vaqueros will compete in the WSC Championships on Friday, Oct. 28 at Oxnard College with a 1 p.m. start.
