Bayonne, Shultz get top awards at football banquet

Will Bayonne and Jacob Shultz were selected as the Most Valuable Offensive and Defensive Players, respectively, at the SBCC Football awards banquet on Monday, Dec. 9 at the Endless Summer Cafe.

Bayonne, a sophomore running back from West Palm Beach, Fla., rushed for 519 yards on 123 carries (4.2 avg.) and caught 15 passes for 265 yards (team-high 17.7 avg.) and four touchdowns. Shultz, a 6-5 sophomore defensive end from Eugene, Ore., led the American Pacific League in tackles (71) and tackles for loss (20.5) while making 8.5 sacks.

Shultz was the Defensive Player of the Year in the American Pacific League and one of 10 Vaqueros to make the All-APL squad.

First-team picks were Bayonne, DB Tyree Barton, P Ray Shay and KR Jaylon Smith. Second-team honors went to QB Bradley Kleven, WR Cyrus Wallace, WR Jahmal Cornwell, DL Matthew Molina and DB Nazir Hopson.

Molina, a 6-4 sophomore defensive end from Dos Pueblos High, was the Most Valuable Lineman, Ray Shay was Most Valuable Special Teams and freshman DB Cory Butler was named Most Improved.
