Christopher Robinson scored an early goal on Friday afternoon and SBCC made it stand up for its first men's soccer win of the year – a 1-0 victory over San Diego Mesa at La Playa Stadium.

Robinson, a freshman from Sweden, took a pass from Adam Chenoweth in the eighth minute and buried a shot from eight yards out on the left side. The Vaqueros have two goals in two games and Robinson has scored them both.

The Vaqueros are 1-0-1 and the Olympians fell to 0-2-0.

"I told the boys at halftime that we've been here before, we've been a goal up and we needed to keep our concentration for the full 90," said Vaquero coach John Sisterson, whose team led LA Harbor 1-0 for most of Tuesday's opener, then surrendered a tying goal in the 90th minute. "We had to keep the ball, stay positive and go forward. We did a good job of managing the game."

The Vaqueros outshot the Olympians 14-7 and dominated in shots on goal, 9-2.

Goalie Gustav Verdouw and the defense posted their first shutout of the season.

"It was good, especially after what happened last game in the last two minutes," said Verdouw, a freshman from Eugene, Oregon. "Chris Robinson is a fantastic player, I love having him up there. He's always creating something on offense.

"Our defense was fantastic. We have a solid unit and everybody worked smooth today. It's a good fun team to play with."

Sisterson singled out the play of defenders Roni Spektor, Neil Gillies and JahMikaili Hutton as well as Sam Pinto, who entered at right back in the 64th minute.

The Vaqueros will take the next two weeks off, then host Bakersfield on Friday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m.
