SBCC took a 1-0 halftime lead over No. 4 Oxnard on Friday afternoon, then settled for a 1-1 men's soccer tie in a WSC North affair at Oxnard.

The 13th-ranked Vaqueros (7-2-2, 0-1-1) scored the first goal when Kyle Nicklaw hit the net in the 37th minute. The Condors (10-2-1, 1-0-1) answered four minutes into the second half when Erik Lopez made a penalty kick for his ninth goal.

There were 33 fouls in the game with SBCC being cited 23 times. There were also five yellow cards and a red card to Oxnard's Evan Zamora in the 90th minute.

"Kyle broke through the defense and tucked it away in the bottom corner," said coach John Sisterson. "We looked comfortable with our one-goal lead, then we committed a foul when they had a corner and they scored on a PK.

"In the last minute, Chris Robinson broke through and would have been 1-on-1 with the keeper but he was pulled down from behind by an Oxnard defender who was shown a red card.

"Overall, it was a good display and the guys competed very well."

Gustav Verdouw returned from injury and made his first start in goal in a month for the Vaqueros.

SBCC is playing four of the next five on the road over the next two weeks. The Vaqueros will travel to Moorpark on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. contest.
