Busenhart has season-high 14 kills as No. 4 Vaqueros sweep San Diego Mesa

Brigg Busenhart had a season-high 14 kills on Saturday, leading No. 4 SBCC to a 3-0 sweep of San Diego Mesa at the Sports Pavilion. The scores were 25-19, 25-20 25-23.

The Vaqueros (7-2) won their seventh straight after opening with two consecutive losses. The Olympians (1-12) dropped their sixth in a row.

Busenhart, a 6-foot freshman from Soquel, Calif. (near Santa Cruz), also led in digs with five. Skanny Herbert added six kills and Keoni Thiim had five kills and five digs. Kevin Vonyokes also recorded five kills and a .571 hitting percentage. Trent Lingruen notched all five of his kills in the third set.

Kyle Merchen piled up 19 assists and two aces. Aaron Letvin, the state leader in aces, had 14 assists and six aces.

"It was another full team effort with everyone getting involved," said coach Jon Newton. "Brigg did a great job leading our offense and Aaron was solid from the service line with six aces."

The Vaqueros return to WSC play next week with home dates vs. Antelope Valley on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and No. 1 Long Beach on Friday at 6 p.m.
