SBCC Announces 2023 Hall of Fame Class

 

The Santa Barbara City College Athletics Department has announced its 2023 class for the SBCC Vaqueros Hall of Fame: Faha Banks, Rusty Fairly, and Ed Gover. We will be honoring them along with members from the Class of 2020 on Friday, June 16th from 5-7 PM at the SBCC Sports Pavilion Patio. Established in 2019, the Hall of Fame recognizes former Vaqueros who have had a lasting impact on the culture of excellence at SBCC. 

"The Class of 2023 recognizes three people that mean so much to Santa Barbara City College Athletics," said Director of Athletics LaDeane Hansten. "Together they have a combined 88 years of dedication to Vaquero Athletics and their positive impact on their teammates and the programs they led is widely recognized. We look forward to honoring their many accomplishments."

Class of 2023 

Faha Banks 

As a freshman at SBCC in 1989-90, Faha averaged 12.5 pts per game and set a  single game record for most 3's in a game going 6 for 6 versus Glendale. She was an All Western State Conference selection and earned a full scholarship to Chapman University (Div. 2). Faha returned to SBCC in 1991-92, improving her scoring average to 18.2 points per game, including 4 games where she hit six 3's. She hit an amazing 52 treys on the season, guiding the Vaqueros to a 14-12 season and a 2nd place finish in the powerful WSC North Division. She earned WSC All Conference as well as All-State honors where she participated in the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game.

 

Rusty Fairly 

Fairly came to Santa Barbara in 1961 as backfield coach at UCSB, where he served four years before SBCC hired him as head baseball coach and assistant on the football staff. Fairly's baseball teams won 255 games, highlighted by a conference championship in 1972. He saw several of his players, including Jesse Orosco and Gary Woods, make it to the big leagues. When he retired as coach, Fairly continued to serve SBCC as chair of its Health, Physical Education and Athletics Division until 1986. 

 

Ed Gover 

Gover had a successful 28-year career with the Vaqueros that spanned 1991-2019.  He compiled a 378-216 record (.636) and secured 11 WSC North Division conference titles. He guided the Vaqueros to a state runner-up finish in 1999 and fifth place in the state in 2013 and 2015. Gover was a six-time WSC North Coach of the Year and the Southern Cal Coach of the Year in 2015. He recruited and coached six straight WSC North Players of the Year – Jenna Anderson (2012), Eryn Young (2013), Maddie Leiphardt (2014), Katelynn Womack (2015), Carolyn Andrulis (2016) and Kaylene Ureno (2017).
