SANTA BARBARA – Closing its series with Moorpark on Saturday at home, the SBCC baseball team won in incredible fashion, as Carson Cahoy's 11th inning grand slam put the Vaqueros on top 10-6.

After taking two of three against the Raiders, Santa Barbara is now 17-11 overall and 10-5 in WSC play, while Moorpark falls to 11-16 overall, 9-6 in conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st Inning (1-0 MC)

  • There was only one run scored in the first five innings of play. Batting in the two-spot, Moorpark's Zac Camel reached first on a Vaquero error and would go on to score on Shane Leong-Grieger's single to right field.
  • After that, both sides would record just one hit prior to the sixth inning as the defenses played solid.

6th-7th Innings (4-3 SBCC)

  • The Raiders started stringing hits together in the top of the sixth. Alberto Prado hit an RBI double and tallied a run of his own soon after to put Moorpark up 3-0.
  • Momentum swung the Vaqueros' way in the bottom of the seventh. Pearce Blaney opened with a double and Owen Crevelt followed with a walk. Gabe Baldavino brought both of them home with a two-run single to right.
  • Caiden Matheny added a two-run shot of his own later in the inning, singling through the left side as Baldavino and Mark Hernandez scored to put SBCC ahead 4-3.

8th-9th Innings (6-6 Tie)

  • Moorpark flew back into the lead with three runs on four hits in the eighth, going up 6-4.
  • SBCC loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but the Raiders got out of the inning without giving up any runs, picking up a strikeout for the last out.
  • Pitcher Charlie Adamson entered the game in the top of the ninth and helped keep it a two-run deficit, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
  • Matheny would get the final comeback started with a single through the left side. Tyler Imbach followed with a double to left center as Matheny advanced to third. After a Moorpark pitching change, Blaney immediately followed up with another clutch double into right field, tying the game.

10th-11th Innings (10-6 SBCC)

  • SBCC's defense got the job done two more times. In the 10th, Adamson struck out the final two batters with runners on first and third. In the 11th, Aiden Garza entered and no Raiders reached first base.
  • The Vaqueros didn't get off to too promising a start in the 11th inning, with outs on the first two at bats.
  • Imbach hit another double and Blaney was intentionally walked. Then, Crevelt was walked, loading the bases. That set the stage for Cahoy's memorable winner, as his grand slam ended the day and gave SBCC its second straight win over the Raiders.

ON THE STAT SHEET

  • The grand slam was Cahoy's only hit of the day on two at bats. It was his first home run of the season.
  • Both teams equaled each other with 11 hits, but the Vaqueros had an 11-2 advantage in walks. Matheny and Blaney tied for team-high honors with three hits each.
  • The Vaqueros set a new season-high with 15 strikeouts. Colby Downard tied a season-high with nine and Adamson finished with four.
