Richards Leads SBCC to Five-Set Win at Moorpark

MOORPARK – The SBCC men's volleyball team went the distance for the first time this season on Friday, coming out on top in a great win at Moorpark, 25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 23-25, 15-11.

The Vaqueros improve to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in Western State Conference matches, while Moorpark moves to 4-4 overall, 0-2 WSC.

Outside hitter Cole Richards went off for a Vaquero season-best 26 kills (.286), also adding 13 digs for his first double-double and leading all players with four aces. Payton Miller (9 kills), Troy Fitzgerald (8) and Sean Ortiz (7) all chipped in on the offensive end as well.

Santa Barbara's defense averaged 15.6 digs per set, shattering its previous top mark. Roth Gulseth finished with a match-high 20. Fitzgerald was the third Vaquero in double-figures with 14 scoops.

Setter Carter Cottrell went for a season-high 51 assists. He and Milton Haliniak both finished with eight digs as well.

A winner in four of its last six outings, SBCC will look to continue its solid start at home against Long Beach this Wednesday at 6 p.m.
