Vaquero Women's Basketball Wins Season-Opener at LA Harbor

LOS ANGELES, CA – On Wednesday, for the fourth time in the last five years, the SBCC women's basketball team won its season opener, defeating LA Harbor on the road 56-44.

Santa Barbara got a big Vaquero debut out of freshman Eva Carrejo, who put in 4-of-9 from deep off the bench. The San Jose, CA native led her team with 16 points, 11 coming in the second quarter alone.

SBCC led 12-9 after one and pushed it into double-digits in the second quarter to lead 28-15 at the break. A big 18-point third quarter saw the visitors take a commanding 46-26 lead heading into the final period.

Three different Vaqueros finished with nine points, including another newcomer in freshman center Paityn Persson. She joined 2021 All-WSC Honorable Mention Isabella Jensen with identical stat lines of nine points and six boards. Second year guard Brianna Jacobs also chipped in with nine points (2-3 3FG) to go with a Vaquero-high three assists.

Also making her SBCC debut, forward Aislinn Mckelvy finished with six points. Sophomore Lia Rodriguez chipped in with seven points off the bench, hitting both of her three-point attempts.

As a team, the Vaqueros knocked down 9-of-25 (.360) from deep and only turned the ball over 12 times. They will return to Santa Barbara for their home opener this Friday against Santa Ana at 5:00 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.
