SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The SBCC women's soccer team scored just one goal on Friday afternoon at La Playa Stadium, but that was all it needed to defeat College of the Canyons 1-0.

With their first shutout of the season, the Vaqueros improved to 4-3 while dropping Canyons to 3-3.

Midfielder Delaney Kenney stayed busy from the corner flag throughout, as Santa Barbara tied a season-high with eight corners for the second straight match. In the 16th minute, she swung in a dangerous ball deep into the center of the box, forcing the keeper to get a hand on it.

The deflection fell right to Savannah Mohatt, whose quick shot from just a few yards out forced a fabulous diving save from the COC goalkeeper.

However, amongst a congested sea of bodies, the ball once again fell to a Vaquero. This time it was freshman forward Theresa English, who made good enough contact to force a shot past the defense and just across the end line.

The first goal of the season for English – who is also tied for the Vaquero-high with three assists this season – proved to be the eventual winner.

The Vaqueros kept the pressure on offensively for the remainder of the game, and it was reflected in the box score with a 16-6 shot advantage. They forced seven saves from Canyon's Kylie Yuzon, while SBCC keeper Analea Pule tallied four on the day.

SBCC will head back on the road next Tuesday, Sept. 28 for its Western State Conference opener at Ventura.
