Vaqueros Dominate the WSC Swim & Dive Championships!

SBCC's 2023 WSC Championship Team
SBCC's 2023 WSC Championship Team

Hard work, dedication to a season-long process, daily drives to San Marcos High School for practice, and a solid belief in each other led to an 8th consecutive WSC Swim & Dive Championship this weekend for SBCC's 2023 team. Led by the incredible coaching team of Chuckie Roth, Paige Treloar-Ballard, Pete Snyder, and Michael Martz, the Vaqueros took control of the meet early and never looked back. They finished the three-day meet with 738 points, 142 points ahead of second place finisher Santa Monica College.

Coach Roth says, "We had so many incredible swims."

Isabella Urlando was named the Western State Conference Swim & Dive Athlete of the Year following an outstanding meet where she clocked two of the fastest times in the state this year. She was the only female to win three events, breaking three SBCC records and three WSC records in the process.

100 Backstroke         :54.91, SBCC Record from 2014 by 4.25 seconds, WSC Record from 1997 by 3 seconds, Fastest time in the state
200 Backstroke       2:02.47, SBCC Record from 2018 by over 11 seconds, WSC Record from 2016 by 10 seconds, Fastest time in the state
100 Butterfly            :55.34, SBCC Record from 2014 by over 5 seconds, WSC Record by over 1 second, 2nd fastest time in the state

Isabella had this to say about the Vaqueros: "I can attribute much of my success this season to the support of my teammates and Coaches Chuckie, Paige, and Pete. Our team dynamic is incredibly positive and uplifting. Chuckie goes above and beyond and with his help I have become not only a better athlete but a better person as well. This is an incredible program that I feel very lucky to be a part of."

Makenna Bloom swam a strategic and brilliant 100 Free to capture her first WSC title and SBCC school record. (52.49)

Diver Morgan Cederholm competed last weekend and placed 1st in the 1 Meter (194.80 pts.) and second in the 3 Meter (151.45 pts.), adding 38 points for the Vaqueros.

Roth continues, "Our success truly lies within the definition of TEAM first. Every one of our girls poured their hearts into each swim. This was one of the most competitive WSC Championship meets. Santa Monica is one of the best in the state, and we only led by narrow margins. We were up by 11 after day one, and 24 on day two. However, I knew we had some big swims on the third day and the girls truly swam incredibly."

The state qualifications are not official until Monday, however Roth anticipates taking a team of eight.
