Madi Mullins had 11 kills, seven digs and two aces on Friday night to spark SBCC to a 3-1 WSC North win in Woodland Hills. The scores were 25-19, 24-26, 25-15, 25-14.
Bella Brandt, a freshman libero from Stuttgart, Germany, had a season-high 18 digs. Lauren Holsted added six kills and 17 digs for the Vaqueros (8-11, 4-3). Setter Maranda Newson had 14 assists and five kills.
"We started slow tonight and after winning game 1 but playing pretty flat, we gave up 7 points in a row to start game 2 and just couldn't get our momentum going," said coach Kat Niksto. "That all changed in game 3 behind a dominant serving effort led by Bella. Once we were able to consistently get them out of system, our offense was able to get more dialed in and when Maranda and Madi are in the front row together, they are hard to stop.
"Defensively we were sparked by the play of Madie Meyer. She came in and laid out for ball after ball, keeping plays alive that with a second chance, we won in transition."
The Vaqueros will travel to Cuesta on Wednesday at 6 p.m. with revenge on their minds. They lost a tough 3-2 decision to the Cougars in the first round.
