Rogers, King pace 71-60 win in home opener

Hannah Rogers scored a season-high 17 points and Destinee King had a double-double as SBCC topped San Diego City 71-60 on Friday night in its women's basketball home opener at the Sports Pavilion.

Rogers, a 6-2 freshman from Bishop Diego High, came off the bench to hit 8-of-11 from the field and scored 17 points in just 16 minutes for the Vaqueros (1-2), who jumped out to a 47-31 halftime lead on the way to their first victory. King, a 5-10 guard from Antelope, Calif., racked up 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Jeanie Pattison, a freshman from Australia, filled up the stat sheet with eight points, seven rebounds, six steals and five assists for the Vaqueros, who led 23-12 after the first 10-minute quarter.

"We played really well and we played together," said coach Sandrine Krul, who's starting her 12th season. "Our bench players kept up the same energy on defense."

The Vaqueros made 75 percent of their free throws (18-24) and had 22 turnovers while forcing 30. Johnson and Rogers had six rebounds apiece, helping SBCC to a 49-40 advantage on the boards.

Kesler Johnson scored 10 points off the bench and played "awesome offense and defense," according to Krul. "She was a real spark."

In Friday's first game of the SBCC Crossover, Fullerton defeated Moorpark 49-39.

Moorpark and San Diego City will tangle at 3 p.m. Saturday and the Vaqueros will take on Fullerton at 5 p.m. Both games will be live-streamed on the Vaquero Broadcasting Network.
