Vaqueros win 10 events to take WSC No. 1

SBCC won 10 of 11 events on Saturday to capture the first WSC women's swim meet at the Ventura Aquatic Center.

The Vaqueros topped the five-school field with 134 points. Ventura was second at 101, followed by Canyons (53) and Cuesta (49).

Reese Ellestad, Alex Humann, Addison Seale and Kristina Hill were all double winners. Ellestad and Humann also swam on the victorious 200-yard medley relay unit that opened the meet with a victory. The other legs were swum by Haley Crowley and Alina Hudson, who finished with the freestyle anchor leg.

Ellestad won the 50 free and 100 back, Humann took the 200 free and 100 butterfly, Seale topped the field in the 200 IM and 100 breast and Hill captured the 1000 free and 500 free. Seale, who won the WSC Pentathlon three weeks ago, took the 200 IM by nearly 12 seconds in 2:15.99.

Hill broke a school record with her 11:25.93 clocking in the 1000 free. Crowley, a freshman from Westlake High, took second in the 200 IM and 100 breast.

"We swam great today with 10 wins in 11 events," said coach Chuckie Roth, who guided the Vaqueros to the WSC title in their second season last year. "I am proud of the entire team and freshman Mackenzie Richards made a big splash. She's been recovering from a bad case of pneumonia and her training has been limited.

"Yet she still managed to swim a season best in the 50 free (3rd place) and 1:13.11 in the 100 back (5th). Mackenzie is a pleasure to coach and always gives it her best."

Richards was the WSC Player of the Year and an All-American goalie on the Vaqueros' WSC championship water polo team last fall.

Roth also praised the effort of Tessa Brinkman, who swam two personal bests.

"She's already beating last year's results," noted Roth. "She took 7th in the 500 free and 4th in the 1000 free for the highest finishes of her career."

The Vaqueros return to the pool on Friday to swim in the Cuesta Invitational.
