Trio of Vaquero Teams Recognized as 3C2A Scholar Teams

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Three Santa Barbara City College sports teams have been recognized for their academic excellence, earning 3C2A Scholar Team honors for the 2023-24 season.

The honored teams are:

"I couldn't be prouder of our men's and women's teams, with 11 men and 14 women earning over a 3.5 GPA," head soccer coach Alex Zermeno said. "These athletes truly embody what it means to be a student-athlete."

While three teams received the recognition, academic excellence remains a priority for every team at SBCC.

"Our entire program is beyond proud of these hard-working student-athletes! We have the conversation in every eligibility meeting about how 'championship culture creates champions' and how a big part of that is 'expecting excellence from each other' in and out of practice every day," athletic director LaDeane Hansten said. "The high standards that these teams have held each other to are apparent to all of us when we get to celebrate them being chosen from programs throughout the state as California Community College Athletic Association Scholar Teams. I'm never more proud to say, 'Go Vaqs!' than when it is for academic success!"

SBCC's resources help student-athletes excel both academically and athletically, preparing them for future success.

"A huge thank you to our athletic department, especially Joann Graham and Michael Gamboa, for ensuring they get the support they need," Zermeno said. "We also appreciate the tutors in the Academic Achievement Zone, as well as those in the Cartwright Learning Resource Center, Math Lab, and the support many of our athletes received from Raíces."
