Vaquero season ends with 8th-place finish in So Cal Regional

Niels Andersen shot a pair of 78s on Monday and SBCC ended its men's golf season with an eighth-place finish in the Southern Cal Regional at El Camino CC in Oceanside.

Riverside won the nine-team competition with 750 strokes, beating Orange Empire Conference rival Cypress by eight shots. WSC champion Canyons was third at 765 and WSC runner-up Ventura grabbed the fourth qualifying spot at 774.

The Vaqueros were eighth with rounds of 392 and 397 for a 789 total. Riverside and Cypress were tied for the lead after the first round at 380. Ventura was third (389) and the Vaqueros were tied for fourth (392) with Canyons.

SBCC finishes the year with an 87-46 record.

Everett Najera of Riverside was the medalist with two rounds of even-par 72 for a 144. He won by four strokes over Joey Herrera (75-73) of Ventura, Dylan Hall (77-71) of Cypress and Josh McCollum (75-73) of Orange Coast.

Andersen topped the Vaqueros at 156. Theo Andre-Fouet (78-79) and Trent Caraher (76-81) shot 157s and Andrew Sederlund (80-79) totaled 159.

"We didn't get the job done today," said coach Chuck Melendez. "When we needed a few guys to go low and go lower as a team, we just couldn't do it. This is a real good group of guys and I was proud to coach them this year."

The top four teams and the best six individuals not on those teams advanced to the State Championships on Monday, May 15 at Cypress Ridge GC in Arroyo Grande.
