SBCC women's volleyball player Kaylene Ureno was selected as female Athlete of the Week by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table.
The award is presented to the top male and female athletes from all the local high schools, SBCC, UCSB and Westmont.
Ureno, a 5-9 sophomore opposite from Turlock, Calif., piled up 47 kills, 30 digs and eight blocks in three upset wins at the Brahma Invitational, hosted by L.A. Pierce. The No. 22 Vaqueros swept No. 13 Butte 3-0 on Friday, then surprised No. 3 Bakersfield 3-2 and No. 4 Grossmont 3-0 to claim the tournament title.
Ureno had 14 kills and 10 digs vs. Butte. On Saturday, she tied her career high for kills (18) and added 12 digs and four blocks vs. Bakersfield. The Vaqueros had been swept by Bakersfield in two previous meetings this year.
In the championship match, Ureno pounded 15 kills with eight digs and two blocks and hit a sparkling .538 in a 25-15, 25-20, 25-14 sweep.
The Vaqueros will host No. 8 L.A. Pierce on Wednesday at 6 p.m. All youth, middle school, club and local high school players will be admitted free of charge.
