Setter Maranda Newson made a triumphant return to the lineup on Friday night, leading SBCC to a 25-20, 25-18, 25-19 sweep of L.A. Mission in Sylmar.

Madi Mullins led the Vaqueros (2-7, 1-0) with seven kills in the WSC North opener and Mackenzie Phelps had six. Newson, who played two matches on Aug. 31 and missed the last six with an injury, contributed five kills on six swings with one block and 13 assists.

Gabi Brewer added four kills and nine digs, Bella Brandt served four aces and Lauren Wold dished out 18 assists.

"Tonight was a fresh start for the team and it's the first match all season with all 10 players cleared to play," said coach Kat Niksto. "Everyone contributed tonight, it really was a team effort. It was great to have Maranda back, she made her presence known at the net

"Jordan Falconer had an efficient offensive day with five kills on 10 swings. Our other middle, Madi Mullins led the team in kills, which shows our depth of attackers when we can control the passing game. Madie Meyer came in midway through the match as a defensive sub and lifted the team up with her all her effort and great defensive plays."

The Vaqueros have a busy day on Saturday with three matches in the Mt. SAC Invitational. They'll take on Victor Valley at 10 a.m., Chaffey at 2 p.m. and Citrus at 4 p.m.
