Women’s Volleyball Opens First Home Game with a Bang

By Anika Brodnansky

Women's Volleyball finished their first home game of the season with a clean sweep against Rio Hondo.

Winning all three sets of their first match, 25-13, 25-15, and 25-5, The Vaqueros set a positive tone for the rest of the season.

"I was proud of how we improved our level of play throughout each set in the game. The third set was some of the cleanest volleyball we've played all season." Head Coach Kat Nitkso said.

This victory was led by a collective team effort, with Team Captain Natalie Lercari-Sullivan holding down the third set. Lercari-Sullivan served the first 16 points in a row before Rio Hondo was able to side out. Lercari Sullivan also had seven aces in the match.

"I'm proud of the girls that were on and off the court for working hard to keep a lead against Rio Hondo. Our high energy, intense communication skills, and our overall ball play was what led us to victory." Lercari said.

The freshmen made their mark on the court as well, four of which being stat leaders in the match.

Valeria Bellodas led with nine digs, Tana Long and Kaylin Cooney each had seven kills, and Grace Demmel with three blocks, five kills, and zero errors.

The Vaqueros next home game will be held in the Sports Pavillion at 10 a.m on Saturday, Aug 31 against East Los Angeles College.
