Chavira, Garibay pace Vaqueros in WSC Preview

Christy Chavira finished 32nd on a 92-degree day on Friday and teammate Yuliana Garibay was 33rd, leading the SBCC women's cross country team in the WSC Preview at Bakersfield College.

Chavira, a freshman from Righetti High, ran the 5K course in 21:21 and Garibay, a sophomore from Santa Ynez, was nine seconds behind. Chavira ran the 7th-fastest time by an SBCC runner at the Kern County Soccer Complex.

Mirandaa Dashian of Cuesta topped the 90-woman field in 18:30.

Lizbeth Zebadua placed 66th for the Vaqueros in 24:53 and Myleka John was 79th in 27:20. SBCC only had four runners due to injuries and illness.

"The ladies were really tough out there today, competing in challenging conditions," said coach Scott Fickerson. "I'm proud of their efforts. We're looking forward to getting a full squad of seven runners to the line."

Next up for the Vaqueros is the Tour de Cuesta at the Fairbanks Cross Country Course in San Luis Obispo on Friday with the women's race starting at 3:30 p.m.
