OXNARD, Calif. – The SBCC cross country teams experienced their first competitive action of 2021 on Friday at the Oxnard Invitational, with three Vaquero runners competing in the Women's 5K and Men's 4-Mile.

Women's 5K
Earning the best finish of the day for the Vaqueros was Linnea Sherman, who took 12th overall out of 56 runners in the Women's 5K with a mark of 20:20. That wasn't too far back from first place finisher Danielle Salcedo (18:08) from College of the Canyons.

Also crossing the finish line for SBCC was Luzie Brings (37th) with a time of 24:23.

"This was a great opener for us," said head coach Scott Fickerson. "Without a full team, we are focusing on individual results and both Linnea and Luzie executed really smart race plans. This was a great set-up for our next races."

Taking first in team scores was Mt. SAC (27), followed by Canyons (64) and Moorpark (71).

Men's 4-Mile
As the lone Vaquero representative in the Men's 4-Mile, Mark Hernandez (78th) posted a time of 26:42.

"Mark set a goal for himself to average under 7:00 mile pace," Fickerson said. "He ended up running even paced 6:40 miles, so this was clearly a great start to the season!"

Out of 90 runners, it was Jesse Alvarado who took first place in the Men's 4-Mile with a time of 23:59.

Once again it was Mt. SAC (17) earning first place team honors. Moorpark (52) and Bakersfield (75) were second and third, respectively.
