Sherman Closes Out Cross Country Season at State Championships
FRESNO – SBCC women's cross country runner Linnea Sherman rounded out her freshman season at the CCCAA State Championships on Saturday morning at Woodward Park, Fresno under foggy skies and 55 degree temperatures.

Running a smart and steady race, Sherman placed 82nd in 20:59 for the 5K course which has hosted the CA Community College State Championship race since 1998. Sherman, who has battled shin splints all season, was relegated to run on an Alter-G Treadmill for training the past two weeks since the Southern California Championships.

"The So Cal course was more or less 5000m of hard concrete," remarked Coach Scott Fickerson. "Unfortunately, that surface really beat up Linnea's shins and she couldn't run the pain was so great. We even tried running on the ultra-soft field turf surface."

Sherman and Coach Fickerson previewed the course on Friday afternoon in what was her first run back on land since the So Cal race. She then toed the line for the State Championships on Saturday and battled her way all the way to the finish line.

"Linnea ran a really tactically sound race given her past two weeks." Coach Fickerson added. "She ran a very steady and consistent pace, moving up 15-20 spots over the course of the race. She showed patience and discipline to run so strongly. I'm really proud of her for putting in such a valiant performance. She backed up her whole season with a race she can remember with pride."

Danielle Salcedo of College of the Canyons remained unbeaten all season to take the State title from the 154 person field. Salcedo clocked 17:54 ahead of the 18:06 by Yahaira Zuniga of San Diego Mesa College. Mt SAC took the state team championship with 63 points over Hartnell College (79) and Riverside College (130).
