WSC Champion Sage Holter Named SoCal Cross Country Athlete of the Week

SANTA BARBARA, CA – After becoming the first Vaquero to win the Western State Conference women's cross country championship in over 15 years of competition, freshman Sage Holter has been named the Southern California Cross Country Athlete of the Week.

Holter had a remarkable win in the women's 5K this past Friday, overcoming a start which put her about 10 seconds behind leader Rain Gomez of Bakersfield at the 1-mile mark. After keeping herself in striking distance over the first 4,000 meters, she gave it everything she had over the last 1,000, deciding she was going to win the race and accomplishing just that with a lifetime-best final time of 18:45.

Sage finished six seconds ahead of the closest runner on her way to First Team All-WSC honors and will be back in action at the SoCal Regional Championship at Bakersfield's Kern County Soccer Park on Nov. 4.
