SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Despite being the No. 21 seed, the Santa Barbara City College men's soccer team has advanced to the third round of SoCal Regional playoffs.
"The Men's team has undoubtedly emerged as the most unexpected contender in the playoffs," said head coach Alex Zermeno. "Despite being the 21st seed, we were not expected to advance beyond the first round. However, we have reached the third round, poised to face Costa. Our team is resolute and determined to become the underdog story that captivates the attention of fans. This narrative will resonate not only in Santa Barbara but throughout the entire 3C2A."
Mariodavid Vega posted a goal and an assist as the Vaqs claimed a 3-0 victory over 12 seed Chaffey on Nov. 19.
The Vaqs used a pair of goals from Payton Rogers to upset the 5 seed LA Mission 2-1, on Saturday.
"This Men's team has been an absolute pleasure to coach," said Zermeno. "Despite facing some challenging results this season, they have consistently demonstrated resilience and determination. They possess a profound understanding of their football capabilities and trust the process that our coach has instilled in them. This coach has recognized our potential to overcome teams that we have previously lost to or tied against, as evidenced by our two playoff victories."
SBCC is led by WSC North Defensive Player of the Year Xavier Salisbury as well as outstanding goaltending from Arturo Alegria.
The Vaqueros look to keep the Cinderella story alive today at 1:30 p.m. at Mira Costa.
