Alex Zermeno

Having served as Assistant Coach on both the Men's and Women's teams since 2021, Alex Zermeno now takes the Head Coach reins, ready to steer the college's soccer programs towards greater heights.

"We feel exceptionally lucky to have hired a dedicated, local coach. Alex has proven himself to be an exceptional coach, motivator, mentor, and role model for our student athletes. His commitment to their academic success and his ability to help them meet their life goals was a deciding factor in our choice to hire him as the head coach for both programs." Athletic Director LaDeane Hansten shared. "We look forward to continuing to compete for CCCAA State Championships with him at the helm. Go Vaqs!"

Under Zermeno's previous role as Assistant Coach at SBCC, his contributions were pivotal to the team's numerous accolades. The women's team secured the 2023 WSC League Title and the 2022 & 2023 WSC Goal Keeper of the Year, while the men's team clinched the 2022 & 2023 WSC Player of the Year. He also guided players to achieve 15 First Team Selections, 12 Second Team Selections, and 8 Honorable Mentions. In addition to his leadership on the field, Zermeno orchestrated the recruitment process, training sessions, scouting reports, and fundraising initiatives.

Zermeno's multifaceted coaching background extends beyond SBCC. At Southern Utah University, he served as an Assistant Coach from 2020 to 2021 under Head Coach Kai Edwards. During his tenure, the university recorded its second-highest winning percentage and the third winning season in its history.

As an Assistant Coach at Dos Pueblos High School from 2019 to 2020, Zermeno's leadership contributed to the team winning the Channel League for the first time in school history and then repeating this success the following year. Zermeno has also enriched local soccer programs at La Esperanza Soccer Club (2013-2014) and Santa Barbara Soccer Club (2014-2023), where he coached various age groups and handled day-to-day operations.

Zermeno, a proud Goleta native, brings the unique advantage of understanding the local culture, the community, and the homegrown talent pool. Alongside his extensive coaching experience, Zermeno holds a Bachelor's degree in Communications from Southern Utah University and USSF E, F, and D licenses. His track record reflects his unwavering commitment to the sport and the development of his players both as athletes and students.
