Vaqueros rout L.A. Valley 12-3 for first victory

SBCC scored in five of six innings on Tuesday afternoon to rout L.A. Valley 12-3 in six innings.

It was the first win of the year for the Vaqueros (1-6) and the fifth straight loss for the Monarchs (2-7).

Two Valley pitchers surrendered 10 walks and the defense made five errors, leading to four unearned runs.

Sophomore left-hander Paige Powell (1-3) tossed all six innings for the Vaqueros, holding the Monarchs to three runs on seven hits.

Santa Barbara took a 5-0 lead on Carson Dunckley's two-out, RBI single in the third. L.A. Valley got a two-run homer from Valery Ramirez in the bottom of the third and cut the deficit to two, 5-3, on Tea Carbajal's sacrifice fly in the fourth.

The Vaqueros responded with five runs in the fifth. Skylar Gothan singled and scored on an infield error, Dunckley had an RBI single, leadoff hitter Cheyenne Walker followed with a two-run triple and Sinai Miranda brought her home with an RBI double to stretch the lead to 10-3.

Dunckley was 2-3 with two RBIs and Walker went 1-3 with two walks. She scored three runs as did Kiari Ancheta and Naomi Churchill.

The Vaqueros will take nine days off, then host Santa Monica in a non-conference game on Friday, Feb. 21 at 2:30 p.m.
