SANTA BARBARA – Playing at home for the first time in 18 days, the SBCC softball team was defeated by Citrus 9-1 in six innings.
Paige Powell had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-2 and accounting for nearly half of the team's hits. She would also move from right field to pitcher for the final inning of the game. Left fielder Sarah Hammonds, Isabella Huckaby and shortstop Alyssa Perez all recorded a single hit.
The Vaqueros (3-12) allowed three runs in the first, but would answer with their only run of the day in the bottom half of the inning. Catcher Naveah Freitas led off with a walk. Pitcher Lauren Indermuehle put a nicely placed sacrifice bunt just inside the right field line, moving Freitas to second. With two outs on the board, Freitas stole third, and Hammonds brought her home with a single to right field.
However, the Owls (5-9) wouldn't allow a run the rest of the way and would score six unanswered runs to end the game an inning early. They finished with a 12-5 hit advantage.
Santa Barbara will be back on the road for three games next week, starting with Friday's 11:00 a.m. matchup at Antelope Valley.
